Clayton County Register, 01 Sept. 1837.
James Flaherty, 65, who died at the University hospital in Iowa City last Saturday morning at 8:40, was buried at St. Joseph's cemetery here yesterday morning after prayers were read at the Home Service company parlors by the Rev. J. P. Taken, pastor of St. Joseph's church.
"Jim," as he was commonly known, was born in Elkport in 1872, the son of Jack and Hannah Flaherty. He lived there for some years, but for the past 20 years has been a resident of Elkader, working as a handy man at odd jobs of painting, gardening, etc., as the work presented itself.
About a week prior to his death, he fell down a hay chute in the Don Munger barn, fracturing his fifth vertebra, and before he could be moved to the hospital in Iowa City, double bronchial pneumonia had set in. He was not strong enough to fight this complication, and death came to him at 8:40 a.m., Saturday, August 28th, to relieve him of his pain.
His body was brought back to the Home Service company parlors and prpared for burial. All day Monday and early Tuesday morning his friends from both Elkader and Elkport viewed the remains there, and then at nine o'clock yesterday morning the body was taken to the St. Joseph's cemetery.
Casketbearers were: Don Munger, Thos. Donohue, E. A. Burlingame, Dean Prouty, Eugene Connor and James Connell.
The deceased is survived by one brother, John, who now is a resident of Allamakee county.
