Clayton County Register, 21 Apr. 1937.

Louis H. Kottman died at his home near Volga City last week Tuesday morning, April 13, at the age of 60 years and 12 days. He had been in poor health for several months but was not considered in immediate danger, and therefore his death, after being confined to his bed only a few days, was not only a shock to his immediate family but to the entire community. Death was attributed to diabetes and a heart attack.

Louis Henry Kottman, son of Henry and Lena (Baars) Kottman, was born in Cox Creek township, this county, on March 31, 1877. He spent his entire life in Clayton county, and as a young man worked for Jim Crain and son for five years.

December 28, 1899, he was united in marriage to Sarah Revell at Volga City. The young couple started their married life on the Jim Crain farm and resided there for 14 years. In 1914 they purchased and lived on the farm where the deceased died.

Mr. Kottman was a faithful husband, a loving father, and provided for his family well. He was considered an able farmer and was highly respected by all who knew him. At his death he was a director of the Volga creamery, which office he had held for the last 25 years. He was a trustee of Sperry township for the last 15 years, and a member of the M.W.A.

He leaves to mourn his death, his wife and the following children: Mrs. Ruth Eckheart, Elkader; Alva Kottman and Mrs. Eva Larson living on the home place. One daughter, Dorothy, preceded her father in death. Also surviving are; one brother, Henry Kottman, of Monona; two grandchildren, Richard and Robert Eckheart, of Elkader; a number of nieces and nephews, besides a large circle of friends.

Funeral services were held at the home last Thursday afternoon at 1:30 and at the Methodist church in Volga City at two o'clock. Burial was made in the Volga City cemetery, the Rev. P. Kitterer and the Rev. E. J. Starr officiating.
