Strawberry Point: When the bells of Emanuel's Lutheran church tolled last Saturday morning, word was soon passed from one to another that Emma Glass was dead. Mrs. Glass had been ill for a number of months, but not considered serious until the past week, when her condition became alarming. Saturday morning she seemed better, the nurse was about ready to prepare her breakfast, when she noticed a change and called her brother and wife, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Jessen, in the room, and she passed quietly away about 8 o'clock. Funeral services occurred Tuesday afternoon at the Lutheran church conducted by her pastor, Rev. Max O. Jahr. Interment was made in the Strawberry Point cemetery. Emma Margaret Jessen was born March 29, 1868, near Strawberry Point, as the oldest child of five of John and Agnes Jessen. Being baptized in early infancy by the pastor of St. Sebald Lutheran church, she later received her catechetical instruction from Rev. Graf, at that time the pastor of this church, and she renewed her baptismal vows in confirmation on Maundy Thursday in 1883, with a class of three confirmands. After attending school here, she helped her father by clerking in the store.
On Dec. 11, 1890, she was married to Lorenz Glass. Soon after, they took up farming and attended to it until they moved to town and lived here since. On July 21, 1930, her faithful husband passed away and left her a widow, who now lived all these years alone in her spacious home. In all these years she enjoyed good health until several months ago, when she began to fail. She is survived by three brothers and one sister: William Jessen and Jesse Jessen, of Strawberry Point, Fred Jessen of Dundee, and Mrs. Mike J. (Agnes) Johannes of Minneapolis, Minn.
Mrs. Glass was well known in this community and enjoyed the friendship of many. She and her husband were members of the Emanuel's Lutheran church for many years, and regular attendants of the services. She was also an active member of the Ladies Aid society, and held the office of the treasurer of this society for several years.
Shortly before her departure she fortified herself against all eventuals by asking for and receiving Holy Communion, thus preparing herself for the walk through the valley of the shadow of death with her Lord, whose staff and rod surely left her not without comfort and help. May she rest in peace.
