Clayton County Register, 26 Aug. 1936, pg 1
Following an illness of seven weeks and two strokes, Henry C. Pahlas died at his home here in Elkader last Thursday, Aug. 20.
Henry Carl Pahlas was born June 24, 1855, in Mauch Chunk, Pa., the son of Fred and Amelia Pahlas. At the time of his death he had reached the age of 81 years, one month and 26 days.
Like two others whose deaths are reported in this issue of the Register, Mr. Pahlas is to be classed with the pioneers. He came to this county in the year 1857, when only two years of age, with his parents who settled at Clayton Center. From there he moved to Farmersburg township and since 1895 Elkader has been his home.
In 1879 the deceased was united in marriage to Sophia Vogt. Three children were born to this union, namely: Fred, deceased; Miss (next line very blurred), and _r. H. M. Pahlas at Dubuque.
Mrs. Pahlas preceded him in death and in the year 1908 he married a second time taking for his partner in life, Clara Meisner, who, together with the two children already named survive as do two grandchildren, Harold and Jane Pahlas of Dubuque and one sister, Mrs. Sarah Mueller of Monona.
Following his removal to Elkader Mr. Pahlas set up a fire insurance business which he continued practically up to the time of his death. He was active in local banking circles; helped organize the Cental State Bank and Trust Co., and has been its president ever since its organization, highly respected and esteemed by all associates. He was a regular attendant of the Evangelical Frieden's church as long as health permitted and was unusually interested in the work of the Masonic lodge belonging to the Elkader Lodge No. 72, A.F. & A.M., the Chapter of the Royal Arch Masons and the DeMolay Consistory of Clinton.
Visiting Masons from all parts of the county as well as other parts of the state were here Saturday afternoon to pay their last respects to a departed brother attesting to the esteem in which he was held by members of this fraternal organization.
Funeral services were held at the late home last Saturday afternoon at two o'clock and at the Evangelical church with interment in the East Side cemetery, the Rev. K. Wm. Braun of Golden, Ill., officiating. Casketbearers were: C. F. Murphy, A. J. Johnson, D. L. Smith, John Bahr, W. C. Dittmer and LeRoy Dittmer.
Relatives from a distance attending the services were: Mrs. Sarah Mueller, Monona, a sister; William Schulte, Fort Dodge, a nephew; the Rev. and Mrs. K. Wm. Braun, and daughters Jeanette and Gwendolyn (Mrs. Braun is a niece); Mrs. Mary Meisner and Mrs. Joe Miller, both of Chicago.
While Mr. Pahlas was never classed as one of the active business men of the community in the sense that we are apt to class them it can be said to his credit that he was a progressive resident of the community. He favored improvements and did his share to bring them about though he always remained in the background asking no credit for his deeds since he felt he was doing his duty to his community.
Like other citizens of his type he will be missed in the daily life of the community.
