MCGREGOR: Fred Phillips of Cedar Rapids, formerly of McGregor, died in the Veterans' hospital in Des Moines, August 07, following several months of illness. Funeral services were held at his home in Cedar Rapids, and the body was brought to McGregor for interment in Pleasant Grove cemetery. A military escort met the funeral procession at the edge of McGregor, and assisted in the services at the grave. Rev. S. F. Kenderdine, pastor of the Methodist church, also assisted in the service.
Fred Phillips was born in McGregor Dec. 02, 1895, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. F. Phillips. He graduated from the McGregor high school and also attended Upper Iowa University and Cornell College. He was active in local organizations here, having served on the school board and city council, commander of the American Legion, and was active in the Methodist church. He served during the whole of the World War, going to France on the first boat and returning on the last troopship, a period of 25 months. He was in the insurance business both here and at Cedar Rapids.
He is survived by his widow and three sisters, Mrs. Adens Baglin of Hollywood, Calif., and Mrs. Ruth Brooks and Miss Marie Phillips, of McGregor.
