The death of Peter Berns, which occurred at his farm home near Garber May 25, 1936, marks the passing of another of Clayton county's pioneer men. A paralytic stroke caused his death.
Mr. Berns was born March 06, 1855, on a farm near Garnavillo, and his entire life was spent in Clayton county. Farming was his life occupation.
On January 06, 1883, he was married to Clara Elizabeth Scheffert, who preceded him in death on Mar. 27, 1926. Five children were born to this union, all of whom remain to mourn their father's death. They are: Mrs. Joe Thein of near Elkader; Mrs. Frank Kainz of near Elkader; Otto Berns of near Garber; Mrs. Leonard LaBarre of St. Paul, Minn.; and Benjamin Berns at home.
Besides the above-named children, eleven grandchildren and two brothers, Henry Berns of Strawberry Point, and Theodore Berns of Elkport, mourn his death.
Funeral services were held at St. Michael's church, Garber, Thursday, May 28, with the Rev. William Goetzinger in charge. Burial was made in the Catholic cemetery at Elkport. Six nephews of Mr. Berns served as pallbearers: John and Realto Berns, Roy and Lawrence Berns, Frank and Irwin Scheffert.
Relatives from a distance who attended the funeral sevices were: Ed and Erwin Scheffert, Monona; Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Berns, Frank Berns, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Stroschein, Mrs. Bert Connell, and Mr. and Mrs. Hubert Zapf and Angeline, Garnavillo; Mrs. Allison Buchheim, Clayton Center; Mr. and Mrs. William Muench, Elkader; Mr. and Mrs. Frank Quinlan, Strawberry Point; Mr. and Mrs. Earl Meder, Guttenberg; and Mrs. Leonard LaBarre, St. Paul, Minn.
