Clayton County Register, 18 Mar. 1936. Garnavillo column.
Hermann August Schultz was born in Frankendorf, Brandenburg, Germany, as the son of Johann Schultz and his wife Caroline (nee Tressin) on Dec. 27, 1853. He lost his father in early years and stayed with his mother until his 16th year, when he took employment as a shepherd. After serving in this capacity for 12 years, he married Miss Elisabeth Massow, on Aug. 28, 1881. The couple made their residence near Seehausen in the Altmark, and Mr. Schultz established himself independently in the sheep industry. In the month of March, 1884, the couple, together with their two oldest children, Frank and Mary, emigrated to America and came to Garnavillo, where they engaged in farming. From March 01, 1904, to March 01, 1905, the family lived in Howard county, west of Cresco. During their residence in Howard county Mrs. Schultz became ill and had to submit to a serious operation at Rochester, Minn. She died there on June 17, 1904. The family then returned to their old home at Garnavillo. The last years of his life Mr. Schultz had resided in the house in town, in which he passed away last Tuesday evening after a brief illness, at 7 o'clock, at the age of 82 years, two months and 14 days. He is mourned by the following children: Frank Schultz, Clayton; Ella Hook, McGregor; Anna Russow, Dubuque; and Adelia Petersen, Garnavillo. two other children preceded him in death: Henry Schultz, Nov. 23, 1891, and Mary Alitz, June 22, 1933. He is also mourned by 20 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
All of us have known Mr. Schultz as an honest, industrial and dependable man, as a faithful husband and father, as a pious member of our Lutheran church. During the last 15 years he served as sexton of St. Joseph's cemetery; for eight years he was janitor at St. Paul's church, and from 1920 to 1931 he was janitor of St. Peter's church.
When he became aware of the fact that the complications of diseases besetting him might bring about his demise, he summoned his children and partook of the Holy Sacrament on Feb. 13th. He gratefully and confidently accepted the assurances of his religion and slumbered away peacefully at seven o'clock last Tuesday evening.
