Elkader Register, Thur., 15 Aug. 1912. Elkport column.
Mrs. Florence Jeanette Harr, nee Sangston, was born in Mallory township, Clayton County, Iowa, on Aug. 12, 1882. She was of a happy, cheerful disposition and grew to womanhood surrounded by those who loved her dearly. On April 10th, 1907, she became the wife of Homer Harr, of Centre Junction, Ia., and a sweet little girl came to be the pet and pride of this household. Several weeks ago the mother, with the little daughter, came to visit with relatives and friends in and near Elkport, and it is here, at the home of her sister, Mrs. Henry Krieg, that she passed away.
She fervently prayed for mercy and desired contritely and earnestly to become a "Child of God" through the Holy Sacrament of Baptisim, consequently, Rev. Foelsch was called, and, upon her request, both she and her little daughter were christened, Mrs. John Sangston, grandmother of the child, acting as sponsor for the same. All that could be done was gladly done to relieve, if possible, in a measure at least, the terrible suffering of the patient. At 7:27 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 07th, 1912, she closed her eyes to look nevermore, in this sphere, upon her loved ones. Have you ever witnessed a death scene ? Ah ! there is no sham, nor deceit there. When the dying lips utter prayer and supplications to God for mercy and forgiveness, then we see that "Life is real, Life is earnest." One Sunday, Aug. 11th, at two p.m., Rev. Foelsch performed the last sad rites of burial from the home of Mrs. Chas Krieg and a large concourse of sympathetic friends attended the burial.
Had Mrs. Harr lived until Monday, she would have been 30 years of age. She was the first of the family of ten children to be taken from earth. Friends and relatives did all in their power to assist in alleviating the sufferings and agony of the patient and death was welcomed at last as the only means of relief from pain.
Those from out of town who attended the burial, Mr. Harr, of Nora Springs, Ia.; Miss Della Mead, of Centre Junction; Allan Thoday, of Volga City. Her brother, Kim Sangston, of Washington, arrived on Monday and the body was placed in state in the vault in such a manner that he could look upon the face of his dear sister even then. Peace to her ashes ! The sympathy of the entire community is extended to the bereaved ones.
