Elkader Register, Thur., 20 June 1912. Guttenberg column.
On Wednesday evening at about 8:15 o'clock, at the home of Herman Sodawasser, in this city, occurred the death of Mrs. Johanna Gussmann (nee Berg), a pioneer resident of Guttenberg. The cause of her death was mostly due to old age. Deceased was born May 14, 1832 at Mecklenburg-Schwerin, Germany, and was 80 years and 29 days of age at the time of her death. She came to America in 1848 with her parents, living in New York City about 4 years and later came to Guttenberg, where she lived until her death. She was married at Guttenberg about 53 years ago to Fritz Gussmann, who preceded her in death 3 years ago. One daughter also preceded her in death about 4 years ago. She leaves to mourn her death three sons, namely, Adolph, of Winona, Minn.; Louis, of Houston, Texas, and William at McGregor, Iowa, also a large circle of relatives and friends, by whom she will be sadly missed, as she was a kind and true mother and friend. The funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at the Lutheran church, of which she was a member, Rev. Janzig officiating. Interment in the city cemetery.
