Elkader Register, Thur., 04 Jan. 1912. Littleport column.
Our town was painfully surprised and deeply shocked on Monday morning, when the news was circulated around that J. J. Lucey was dead, having been found dead in bed about 7:00 that morning. He retired on Sunday evening between 10 and 11 o'clock apparently in his usual health and while his brother Daniel slept in the same room but in a different bed he was not aware of his death until his sister Mary made the appalling discovery as stated. Coroner L. A. Zearley was called and empanneled a jury consisting of J. J. Brich, C. C. Pust and S. M. Stalnaker, who, after hearing the testimony of Dr. Brown and Daniel Lucey returned a verdict of death caused by fatty degeneration of the internal organs. He was about 42 years of age and unmarried.
