We are in receipt of the following most melancholy intelligence. The deceased was a favorite here as well as elsewhere, and sorrow will chill the hearts of her many Iowa acquaintances on reading it. The notice is from an Ohio paper. The sadness we feel for friend Albert in this great bereavement cannot be expressed in words:

DIED - Of consumption, on the 19th of Nov., 1866, at the residence of her father in Morrow county, Mrs. Maria Freeman, wife of Albert L. Freeman, and daughter of Thomas Madden.

Her patience and resignation during her protracted and painful illness demonstrated the beauty and truthfulness of her Christian character. Her loss is deeply felt by her bereaved husband, her kind parent and numerous friends.

Mourn not for her, her spirit's gone,
The white-robed angel bears it on;
Her journey's o'ere, her task is done,
Her life is ended, Heaven has won.

~Weekly North Iowa Times, Wednesday, December 19, 1866; pg 2

_______

Notes: She was the d/o Thomas H. & Rebecca Madden of Harmony, Morrow co. OH. The 1850 U.S. census of that place enumerated Thomas H., age 45, farmer; his wife Rebecca, age 49; their children Prefella, 20, Mary, 17 and Maria, 12. Ohio Marriage records (Ancestry. com) gives Rebecca's maiden name as Beard & marriage to Thomas Maddon 8/30/1827. Thomas & Rebecca are buried in the Marengo cemetery, Morrow co. OH. Maria (Madden) Freeman is very likely buried there as well.

Albert L. Freeman was enumerated on the 1850 (age 14) & 1860 (age 24) U.S. census in Bennington twp., Morrow co. By the 1870 census he has remarried.
