Our sister town, and indeed the whole county has sustained a severe loss in the death on the 16th, (Sunday last) of Capt. Elisha Boardman, late of Company D., 21st Iowa Infantry, and at his death Sheriff of Clayton County.
Capt. Boardman, during the campaign which resulted in the capture of Vicksburg, contracted a disease called Tuberculosis of the Liver - this, it was thought, carried him off.
He was about forty years of age, an old settler of this county, an excellent man, and cool in battle to indifference; a companion in arms tells us that he never flinched from the severest duty nor expressed alarm in word or countenance while shells were whistling about him. He was much beloved and his death is most sincerely regretted.
His aged father, Elisha Boardman, still survives and is in excellent health. The township in which Elkader is situated takes its name from him, he having settled and lived in it more years than make the average of life.
