Charlotte A. Butler was born in Wisconsin, April 12, 1849, and died at her home four miles west of Volga, Aug. 21, 1916, being 67 years, 4 month and 12 days old.

When about two years old her parents came to Iowa and settled on the farm now owned and occupied by Mr. Abe Moats, which her grandfather, Jason Butler, entered as government land, and owned by Mr. Hannon.

Charlotte grew to womanhood in this community. In 1866, March 12th, she was united in marriage to Mr. C.B. Phillips, who about six years ago preceded her to the better Land.

To this union were born seven children, three of whom have passed on before, one in infancy and two in early womanhood.

One daughter, Mrs. Nora Lehman of LaPorte, Iowa; Sherwood, Carl, Arthur and wife on the home farm, one granddaughter, Bessie Lehman, one grandson, Virgil Lamphier of Clermont, one uncle, Riley Butler and two daughters of Des Moines, besides numerous nieces and nephews are left to mourn her loss.

Mrs. Phillips had a host of friends who will also miss her, as she was well and favorably known.

She had been failing in health for some months, but was well cared for by her children, all whom were present during her last illness. Everything that could be done for her comfort was freely done. She realized her end was near, and said it was all right. Her pastor, Rev. Nielsen, visited her a few days before her departure, and in reply to his question, if she was prepared for the change, she said, she was ready to go.

Her funeral was held in the M.E. church, Tuesday afternoon and was conducted by her Pastor, Rev. Nielsen.

"Blessed are the dead that die in the Lord . Yea, they rest from their labors, and their works do follow them."

~Volga City News, Wednesday, August 30, 1916; pg 1

Note: her parents were Homer & Betsey (Freeman) Butler (1860 U.S. census, Sperry twp.) Homer was the eldest son of Jason & Marilla (Wilcox) Butler. He served in the Civil War. Jason Butler was a soldier in the War of 1812. Both men are profiled in the Military Records section of the Clayton co. IAGenWeb website.
