Elkader Register, Thur., 01 Dec. 1892.
At the home of her sister, Mrs. C. Muzzy, of this place, on Monday evening, November 28th, 1892, occurred the death of Mrs. Lovinia C. Durkey, after a short sickness.
Lovinia C. Hodgskins was born at Grand Isle, Vermont, October 03rd, 1819, and consequently was over 73 years of age at the time of her death. She was married at her birthplace, January 18th, 1837, to Henry Durkey, and in the same year removed to Plattsburg, N.Y., where three children were born to them, all of whom have passed to the home beyond the grave. Mr. Durkey was killed at the battle of Manassas Junction during our Civil War and deceased is survived only by her sister Mrs. C. Muzzy, at whose home her death occurred, and a brother who resides at Mitchell, S.D. Among the mourning relatives are a brother-in-law, C. M. Hewitt, of Albert Lea, Minn., who arrived here shortly after her death, a niece Mrs. Knatvold, of Albert Lea, and a granddaughter, Mrs. Emma Gossmann, of Elkader, all of whom have the heartfelt sympathy of our citizens in their great bereavement.
The great bereavements sustained by the deceased in the death of her husband and children had partially clouded her mind, but withal she was a very pleasant lady who was greatly beloved by all who knew her, and her sudden death has cast a gloom over the entire community.
The funeral took place yesterday afternoon from the residence of Mr. and Mrs. C. Muzzy, Rev. R. C. Lusk officiating.
