Elkader Register, Thur., 01 Sept. 1892.

At his residence in this township, on Saturday last, occurred the death of Nicholas Thillen, after a long sickness with asthma and dropsy.

Deceased was born in Luxemburg, Germany, February 7th, 1813, and was therefore nearly 80 years of age at the time of his death. He remained in his native land until 1856, when he came to the United States, locating in Dubuque County where he resided for five years. In 1861 he removed to Clayton County and purchased the homestead where his death occurred. In 1869 he married Barbara Tresch, who, with two grown children survive him.

He was a quiet, unassuming man but was highly esteemed by all his neighbors. By hard work and close attention to business affairs he amassed a competence, leaving his family in comfortable circumstances.

The funeral took place Monday morning from the Catholic church, Rev. Father Reilly officiating, and was largely attended by relatives and friends, who thus paid their last respects to one whom they admired in life, and whose death they deeply mourned.
