Elkader Register, Thur., 04 Aug. 1892. Strawberry Point column.
J. R. Addis, living south of town, about two and one half miles, on the county line, committed suicide Monday July 25th, by drowning. Despondency, caused by ill health, was the probable cause. He had a severe attack of LaGrippe two years ago, from the effects of which he never fully recovered. It appears that after breakfast Monday morning he acted strangely around the house, so as to excite the suspicion of his wife. Eluding her observation he proceded to the adjoining farm of his son-in-law, Jacob Troup, on which there is a deep pond. Taking off his coat and hat he plunged into the pond, where he was found in about half an hour, but life was extinct. Mr. Addis was born in Boone County, N.Y., April, 1822. He settled in this state, Buchanan County, about 35 years ago, came to this part of the state about 12 years ago. He was married in 1844 to Hannah Sanders, who survives him. They have had four children, all of whom are living: Julia, Loretta, Maryette and Emma.
