Elkader Register, Thur., 26 May 1892.

It is with great regret that we chronicle the death of our old townsman, P. H. Mullen, which occurred at his home in Dubuque on the evening of May 21st, at 8:45 o'clock, surrounded by his wife, children, and friends. His death was the result of an attack of la grippe, terminating in quick consumption.

Deceased was born in the county Galaway, Ireland, in 1824, and consequently was about 68 years of age at the time of his death. In 1846 he came to the United States, locating in New York. Here he was married in 1850 to Miss Ann Carroll, who with three sons and four daughters survive him. In 1852 he removed to California, but returned to New York State in 1854. One year later he came to Iowa, settling on a farm in Cox Creek township. The life of a farmer did not suit him, and in 1857 he removed to Janesville, Wis., where he opened a hotel and began his career as a landlord, which occupation he followed until his death. In 1869 he again returned to Iowa, locating at Elkader. At this place he opened the Union Hotel on Front street, which he operated for over twenty years, always enjoying a good share of trade.

During his long residence in Elkader Mr. Mullen was respected by all, and it can truly be said of him that no person was turned from his door hungry. The penniless tramp was given a warm meal as readily as the more prosperous person, and his death will be sincerely mourned by all who knew him.

His remains were brought to Elkader for burial and the funeral took place from the Catholic church at this place on Monday and was largely attended by his old friends and neighbors. His remains were laid to rest in the Catholic cemetery beside those of a son who died several years ago.

May he rest in peace.
