Elkader Register, Thur., 26 May 1892.

Monday last Mr. Griffith of the Register received a letter conveying the sad intelligence of the death of Mrs. B. S. Whitney, of Quasqueton, Iowa, which sad event occurred at the home of her daughter, Mrs. V. F. Davis, Winona, Minn., on Saturday morning of last week. Some six weeks ago Mrs. Whitney left her home at Quasqueton for a visit with her daughters, Mrs. C. H. Stearns, of Owatonna, Minn., and Mrs. Davis, at Winona. At that time she was feeling very well, although somewhat broken in health from a severe attack of the grip last winter. After an extended visit at Owatonna she went to Winona and seemed to be improving. Last Friday she was taken suddenly sick and before her husband or son could reach her bedside, she had passed away, her death being attributed to heart failure.

Diana Switzer was born in Quebec, Canada, Jan. 06th, 1832, and consequently was a little over sixty years of age at the time of her death. April 11th, 1849, at Norwich, Ontario, She was married to Bartley Stewart Whitney, who with three grown children are left to mourn the loss of a loving wife, kind hearted and tender mother. In 185_ they located at Geneva, Wis., where they resided for five years, and in 1859 the came to Elkader, where they resided for thirty years, removing from here to Quasqueton three years ago. During their long residence here Mrs. Whitney formed a large circle of acquaintances, among whom she was highly regarded for her many virtues of heart and mind. Always kind hearted, she performed many kindly acts for her neighbors in hours of sickness and by her sympathetic nature assisted them in bearing the burdens of sorrow laid upon them. For these reasons she always occupied a warm spot in the hearts of her acquaintances; her sudden death causing a great shock to them all, and many a tear will be shed for the true friend who has gone to the world beyond the grave.

Funeral services were held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Davis in Winona, Monday, Rev. Mr. Avery officiating, after which her remains were brought to Elkader, and laid away beside those of a son who died a number of years ago. The remains were met at the depot by a large concourse of our citizens and a short service was had at the grave, Rev. J. D. Perry officiating.
