Elkader Register, Thur., 31 Mar. 1892.
Sunday morning this community was startled by the announcement that Mrs. S. Moyer had died suddenly at about 11:30 o'clock the previous night. It appears that on Saturday evening her daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Alonzo Wells, were visiting at her house, and Mrs. Moyer was in extraordinary good spirits and had entertained them with stories of her younger days. After Mr. and Mrs. Wells had left for home, Mrs. Moyer retired to her room in the lower part of the house, which she occupied with her daughter Kate, the rest of the family sleeping up stairs. This evening it happened that Miss Kate had gone to a friend's house, a few miles from town to spend the night, and Mrs. M. was alone.
Some time after 11 o'clock Mrs. Moyer called to her daughters that she was sick and unable to breathe. They hastened to her and while some attended her others ran to the nearest neighbor and for a doctor, but it was unavailing; before anything could be done she quietly passed away. For some years she has been afflicted with a goitre upon her neck, and it is thought that this enlarged on the inside and caused suffocation.
The deceased, Sarah A. Young, was born Jan. 11th, 1830, in Jefferson, Ohio, and was married to Samuel Moyer April 27, 1849, and in 1854 they came to Elkader. To them were born twelve children, Nellie, Frank, Will, Charles, Lizzie, Henry, Kate, Bert, Fred, May, Minnie and Stella. Of these all are living except Henry and Will. In 1879 Mr. Moyer died, leaving to the care of his wife this large family of children. As an affectionate mother devoted to her family, and a kind hearted neighbor ever ready to assist in cases of distress, her loss will be sorely felt. Besides her own family she leaves two brothers who reside at Jefferson, Ohio, and two sisters, Mrs. Stewart, at Aspen, Col., and one at Erie, Pa.
The funeral took place on Tuesday afternoon, being largely attended by sympathizing friends of the family.
