Elkader Register, Thur., 31 Maar. 1892.

On Tuesday, March 29th, Elkader was called upon to mourn the loss of its oldest business man in the death of Englebert Kaltenbach, the jeweler, who died that afternoon. Mr. Kaltenbach was born in Baden, Germany, April 06th, 1817. At the age of 14 he commenced to learn the trade of watchmaking, which his father followed. At 21 years of age he left his native country for England, where he arrived the day before the coronation of Queen Victoria, and soon after located in Wales where he remained thirteen years and during that time acquired the Welsh languish, which he delighted in speaking. From there he went to France, and then in 1854 embarked for the United States, coming directly to Dubuque where a brother then lived. In 1855 he located at Elkader and established himself in the jewelry business. In September, 1862, he was united in marriage to Josephine Siedel, at Potosi, Wis., who with their only child, Miss Frances Clara, survives him.

Mr. Kaltenbach's many years in business here have made him hosts (of) warm friends who will greatly miss his familiar figure and pleasant manners. In all these years he has maintained a reputation of being strictly honest in every transaction. To his friends he was always social and delighted to entertain them with stories of his travels in his younger days or of the time when he first settled in Elkader. To his family he was an affectionate husband and a kind father, and even if the failing health and increasing years warned them of the event that comes to all, still when it came as a sudden blow, the wife and daughter were rendered almost heartbroken.

They have the sympathy of our people in their great loss.

The funeral will take place this, Thursday, morning at the Catholic church.
