Elkader Register, Thur., 22 Aug. 1889.
North McGregor of Friday last was the scene of a distressing accident which resulted in the death of a little girl. Two children of Mr. Hiverson and two belonging to a neighbor were playing in the rear of the family residences. There was a cave in the side of the hill, and here they had constructed a play house. While playing outside they noticed that the embankment was caving down and they ran into the cave to secure their dollies and other playthings, and before they could escape the earth came down and buried them under six feet of dirt.
Mrs. Hiverson shortly missed them, and noticing the land-slide thought perhaps they had been buried under it gave an alarm. Willing hands were soon at work removing the dirt, and soon uncovered the little ones. All were insensible, but three were afterward brought to life, but little May Hiverson was beyond all human aid. The funeral of the little unfortunate took place on Sunday and was very largely attended.
The afflicted parents have the heartfelt sympathy of all in their bereavement.
