Elkader Register, Thur., 16 May 1889.
On Tuesday last George Baumann residing in Volga township, near Communia, met with an accidental death. Mr. B., had a man at work for him doing some grubbing, and on Tuesday went out to see how the work was progressing. He approached the man from the timber, and his approach was not noticed. A tree that was being felled struck him and crushed his skull. As his approach had not been seen and as he made no outcry when struck, the fact that he was lying crushed under the tree was not discovered until the workman found him while trimming up the tree, some minutes after it fell. When discovered he was still alive but died before he could be carried into the house.
Deceased was a native of Wurtemberg, Germany, and was about 66 years of age. He located in this county in the fifties and was well known by all the early settlers. A hard working honest man, he was honored and respected by all, and his death is deeply regretted. He leaves an aged wife and seven grown children to mourn his loss.
The funeral will take place to-day at one o'clock and his remains will be laid away in the cemetery at Communia.
