Elkader Register, Thur., 24 Jan. 1889.
The scourge, diphtheria, did sad work in the family of Dr. Jaeger, who resides near Osterdock. His wife, two sons and a daughter have all died from the disease, and an older son is quite sick with it. The children who died were aged, 13, 15 and 17.
_____________
Katherine Jaeger 1837-1/12/1889 (per WPA records) has a gravestone in St. Paula cemetery. It is very likely that her children are also buried there. The 1880 U.S. census enumerated the family of Joseph & Catherine Jaeger. She aged 42 - with 8 children:
Jacob (19), Peter (17), Joseph (11), Margretha (9), Frederick (7), Edward (4), Caroline (2)& Catherine (2mo)- adding 8 yrs to their ages:
Jacob, Peter & Joseph would be too old according to ages given in newspaper
Margretha, Frederick & Edward would be approx right age of those given in newspaper
Caroline & Catherine would be too young according to ages in newspaper-the obituary of Joseph Jaeger, 1899, states that his wife & 4 children died in January 1889 of diptheria - the children are not named, stating 2 daughters and 2 daughters which in conflict with the above death notice
