Elkader Register, Thur., 06 Dec. 1888. Garnavillo column.
Died, at his home in Clayton township, on Thursday, November 29th, Herman Friedrich Otting, one of the oldest inhabitants of our county. Mr. Otting was born August 22, 1810, in Maekel, Hanover, Germany. He was married in 1834 to Sophia Schroeder, who died in 1882. The fruit of this union were ten children of whom three died, and the rest, four daughters and three sons, are living. Mr. Otting emigrated to this country in 1854, living a year in Cincinnati, Ohio. In 1855 he moved to Clayton County, where he has resided since. His remains were buried in the Garnavillo cemetery on Saturday, followed by a large procession of people from all parts of the county. There were over 50 teams in line. Mr. Otting was an earnest Christian, who labored for the benefit of his fellow men. He was one of the founders of the Garnavillo Lutheran church, and took great delight in promoting the welfare of that institution and spreading its beneficent influences among the people of our county. Simple and frugal in his habits, he hated shams in whatever phase they presented themselves. Scrupulously honest in his dealings with his fellow men, he expected the same from them. By diligence and frugality he amassed a large fortune, and was thus enabled to provide well for his family. He is mourned by 47 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.
