Elkader Register, Thur., 04 Oct. 1888. From the McGregor Times, undated.
In this city, at 12:30 Tuesday morning, Sept. 25th, '88, of consumption, Miss May, only daughter of Mrs. A. M. Goddard, aged 22 years, 11 months and 6 days.
May was in failing health for a year or so. Realizing the severity of her sickness she was firm in battling against great odds, and buoyant with hope, the struggle was maintained uncomplainingly, with a Christian fortitude derived from an explicit confidence in Him who guides and directs. A graduate of the McGregor High School, class of 1885, she was engaged in teaching, and was more than successful. Her pupils in Mendon and Jefferson townships will recall her noble qualities of woman and heart, and remember with pleasure her many acts of kindness and benevolence. Loved and admired by all who knew her, a Christian pure in thought and deed, her loss is deeply deplored. She was a member of the Congregational church, a devoted child of all that was good, true and holy. The only daughter, her vacant place in the family circle will be a constant sorrowful reminder of the departed. The family and relatives have the heartfelt sympathy of the community. The funeral takes place at the Congregational church to-day at 1 o'clock, Rev. Marshall officiating. Burial in Oakland cemetery. = McGregor Times.
Miss Goddard was a daughter of the late A. M. Goddard, who was one of the founders of the Register. To the sorely afflicted mother we extend our heartfelt sympathies.
