Nehemiah St. John was born on the 18th day of Nov., 1803, and died Sept. 1st, 1888; had he lived until the coming Nov. he would have reached the ripe age of 85 years. He was born on a farm near Lake Champlain, Vermont. When a young man he came west to Michigan working at his trade, shoemaking. On Feb. 05th, 1839 he married Miss Elmena Freeman, of Michigan. They moved to near Janesville, Wis., where they lived until the fall of 1852, when he moved to Iowa and settled on their late farm, where he lived 36 years. By this happy union there were born to them seven sons and two daughters, five sons and one daughter survive their parents. Mr. St. John is the third member of this happy family that has been taken away in a little over a year.
The deceased was a man of strong convictions and was always ready to defend them. He believed in the Universal Salvation of his fellow man, and died happy in that faith. He was a good, kind husband, father, neighbor; and having lived out more than the allotted years of man, was perfectly willing to pay the debt of nature. He retained his faculties to the last. He inherited a good constitution and enjoyed life while he lived and died of natural decay. The funeral took place at the St. John school house on Monday, Sept. 3d, the services being conducted by Rev. Matt. Wing, who delivered a masterly discourse. There was quite a large attendance.
