Elkader Register, Thur., 07 June 1888.
Last Wednesday evening at Beulah, occurred the first fatal accident on the Elkader branch. The train was just pulling out of the Beulah yard for McGregor, when Brakeman Elmer C. Howard slipped and fell from the car ahead of the caboose and went under the wheels. His right leg was badly mangled above the knee, and after being taken to North McGregor the doctors amputated the limb. The shock was to great and he passed away just after the operation.
Mr. Howard was an old Clayton County boy, having been born near Elkader, but for several years past has been living with his mother at Cedar Falls, Iowa, to which place his remains were taken for burial. He had been at work in this vicinity but a short time, but was highly esteemed by all who knew him.
