Elkader Register, Thur., 17 May 1888. From the McGregor Times of the 10th.

Henry Hutchinson for a number of years past has been in the employ of the Washburn's, and was well and favorably known hereabouts. On the 7th he was with Ed. Washburn, in Grand Meadow township, aiding in driving a herd of cattle to West Union. When nearly opposite Carl Schultz's premises it was found desirable to catch a couple of the critters, and one of the cows having been caught, Hutchinson, who was seated on the loaded wagon, held the rope tied to the cows horns, while Washburn went to catch the other cow. In following her up she run around the cow Hutchinson was holding, and coming into close quarters the roped-cow gave a plunge which drew Hutchinson over and being unable to recover himself he fell to the ground striking on his head, causing almost instant death. When picked up it was found that his neck was broken. Carl Schultz, Fritz Schultz and Dan Connally witnessed the accident, and though everything was done that could be to restore life all efforts were of no avail. A few minutes after the fall and life was extinct.

Henry Hutchinson was a native of Pennsylvania. Coming west in an early day he labored in the lead mine regions of Wisconsin and later came to Iowa where he engaged with Mr. Teatts, and in February, 1864, enlisted in Company C, 16th Iowa Infantry, serving one year. After his return from the war he settled here in Clayton County, and has since been a laborer for one party and another, of late years with the Washburne's, between McGregor and Giard. He joined Hervey Dix Post, G.A.R., the first year of its organization. He was a good worker, and a kind hearted fellow. We do not know that he was ever married, and of his relatives little or nothing is known. His remains were brought to John Orr's residence Tuesday morning, from which place the funeral took place yesterday morning at 10 o'clock, Rev. Nathaniel Pye officiating, members of the Grand Army acting as pallbearers. - McGregor Times - 10th.
