Elkader Register, Thur., 17 Nov. 1887. Volga column.
The funeral of John Casey was largely attended on Monday, Nov. 14th. His remains were brought to Volga on the morning train, and thence to the Catholic church in Cox Creek, where the services were held, and the body laid beside friends that had gone before. John was a good boy, always kind and obliging. He was born in Sperry, on Hewitt Creek, his father dying when John was young he lived with his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Maddock, until a man grown, when he went out for himself. Deceased was about 27 years old, and for many years had been in the employ of the C.M. & St. P. R.R., but recently had gone on to the Minnesota & Northwestern as a fireman. He was killed at Lamont, Ia., Nov. 10th. As the engine on which he was firing, was taking water at the station, the rear section of the train, which had broken in two, came rushing down the grade and knocked Casey off the tender and ran over him. He had been married but two short months.
