At the family residence in Guttenberg at four o'clock on Friday, July 29, 1887, occurred the death of Mrs. Henry Stevens, after a long sickness.
Mrs. Stevens was a native of Germany, where she was born in 1816, being seventy-one years of age at the time of her death. In 1835 she came to the United States with her parents, locating in Cincinnati, where she was married to Henry Stevens in 1836. They celebrated the fiftieth anniversary of their marriage last September. They removed to Clayton county some twenty-two years ago, and have resided here continuously. Mrs. Stevens leaves an aged husband; five daughters and one son to mourn her death. The daughters are: Mrs. H. C. Grotewohl, Elkader; Mrs. Henry Eppens, Mrs. George Gus and Mrs. John Friecke, of Guttenberg; and Mrs. August Saffelder of Omaha. The funeral occurred Sunday last, her remains being laid away in the Lutheran cemetery at Guttenberg, in the presence of a large concourse of sorrowing neighbors and friends.
