Elkader Register, Thur., 21 Apr. 1887.

At the family residence in this township, on Saturday morning last, at ten o'clock occurred the death of Mrs. John Leonard, of heart disease, after a long sickness.

Sarah Horran was born in county Meath, Ireland, on Dec. 27th, 1836, and while she was quite young her widowed mother came to the United States, settling in New York. They had been there but a short time when the mother died, leaving four daughters to face the world's trials without the protecting care of a father or mother. The daughters continued to reside in New York, and in that city, August 30th, 1852, Sarah was married to John Leonard, who survives her. About 12 years ago they came to Clayton County, and located in this township, where they have continued to live ever since.

She leaves a husband and seven children to mourn the loss of a loving wife and mother. She also leaves two sisters in New York, and one who arrived here last Friday, to mourn for a loving one gone before.

Mrs. L. was well liked by all who knew her, and she was known to nearly everybody in this vicinity. The Leonard home was always open to all, and she was the soul of hospitality, as the writer can testify. None ever visited them who did not want to repeat the visit, and it was with sorrow that they learned of her death.

The funeral occurred on Sunday at two o'clock, and her remains were followed to their last resting place in the East Side cemetery by a very large number of our citizens. Rev. I. C. Lusk preached the funeral sermon.

A good wife, mother and neighbor has gone to her reward in the home beyond the skies.
