Elkader Register, Thur., 03 Mar. 1887.
On Friday morning of last week, at 6 o'clock, occurred the death of Mr. F. W. Dennert, after a sickness of about two weeks duration.
Deceased was born in Lauchstadt, Germany, Aug. 08th, 1842, and was therefore a little over 44 years of age. He received a good education in his native country and was afterwards apprenticed to the painter's trade, which he learned thoroughly in all its branches, and he followed that occupation until compelled to abandon it by his last sickness. In 1864 and 1866, during the wars between Germany and Denmark and between Germany and Austria, he served with distinction in the armies of his native country. Early in 1868 he emigrated to the United States, and located in Dubuque. Here he was married to Mrs. Caroline Scherr, in 1869, and by her he had four children, Frank, Fred, Emma and Carrie, all of whom are living, and who with four step-children are left to comfort the heart broken widow. In 1874 he came to Clayton County, locating at Elkader, where he lived honored and respected by all to the time of his death. He has held the office of Justice of the Peace for three or four years. He was a member of Elkader Lodge, No. 72, A.F. & A.M., A.O.U.W., and was a member of Harmony Chapter and the Knights Templar in Masonry.
The funeral on Sunday was largely attended by the members of the various orders and our citizens. Rev. Lusk preached the funeral sermon. The funeral was in charge of the Masonic fraternity, and conducted according to the rites of that order. Honored and respected in life, his grave will be kept green by his mourning relatives and friends.
