From the Wed., 28 June 1939 issue of “Clayton County Register” (Elkader, IA), page 5, column 4:

FRED LENTH

Funeral services were held here last Thursday afternoon at 1:30 at the late home and at 2:00 at the Evangelical Frieden’s church for Fred Lenth. Burial was made in the East Side cemetery with the Rev. P. Kitterer officiating. Casketbearers were: L. J. Palas, Henry Tewes, Louis Bente, Wm. Muench, Wm. Huebner and Chas. Gottschalk.

The deceased, the son of Fred Lenth and his wife, Mary, nee Holter, was born Nov. 4, 1864, in Farmersburg township, and died at his Elkader home Wednesday afternoon, June 21, 1939, reaching the age of 74 years, seven months and 17 days.

On May 2, 1893, he was united in marriage to Margretha Stenzel at White Bear Lake, Minn. One child was born to this union, Mrs. Ruth Degenford, of Elkader.

Mr. and Mrs. Lenth spent the first years of their married life in LeSueur and St. Paul, Minn., at which time he was employed as a brakeman on a passenger train, on the Northern Pacific. In the year 1902, the couple came to Elkader, and have made their home here ever since. The deceased served this community in the capacity of Justice of the Peace and also as a Councilman. He was a member of Friedens Evangelical church and of the Masonic lodge.

The deceased had not enjoyed good health for the past three years. About three years ago he underwent an operation and partially regained his strength and was able to be up and around until ten weeks ago, when he was confined again to his bed. He suffered much until the angel of death relieved him.

He leaves to mourn his departure, his wife, his daughter Ruth, two grandchildren, Jean and John Degenford, and one brother, Henry Lenth, all of Elkader.
