Elkader Register, Thur., 02 Dec. 1886. Volga column.
Another of the pioneers of Clayton County has gone to her long home. Mrs. Betsey I. Stevens, wife of Peter Stevens, formerly of this place, died at her home in Elk township, near Elkport, Nov. 25th, 1886, aged 58 years, 9 months and 8 days. She leaves a dear husband, one son and two daughters and a large number of friends to mourn her loss. Mr. Stevens and family moved from Michigan to Clayton County 31 years ago and settled in Sperry, and after a year or two moved onto his farm 3 miles from Volga on the Elkader road. He resided on his farm a few years, then sold and moved to Elkader and came back here after a short time. He was a carpenter and in 1864 he and Mr. Bush built the M.E. church. In 1883 he bought a good stock farm in Elk township, where he now resides. Mrs. Stevens was a kind neighbor and a member of the M.E. church. Her last sickness was of short duration, less than a week. Lung fever was the cause of her death. Her two daughters are married, one living near Edgewood, the other at Manchester. Her remains were brought to Volga and buried in the city cemetery. The funeral was conducted by Rev. I. C. Lusk, assisted by Rev. Lockwood, of Edgewood, on Saturday last, a large number of sympathizing neighbors and friends being in attendance. The pall bearers were: H. W. Rizer, G. S. Masters, J. G. Fleming, J. H. Beatty, H. A. Rizer, of Elk township; and C. S. Blair of Sperry.
