Elkader Register, Thur., 11 Mar. 1886.
At the home of his parents, Mr. and Ms. D. R. Mills, Elkader, on Sunday evening, March 07th, occurred the death of Charles D. Mills, of inflammation of the bowels. He was taken sick on the Monday preceding, but was not thought to be in a dangerous condition until Sunday, when he failed rapidly, and soon was beyond all earthly aid.
Deceased was born near Roca, Lancaster Co., Nebraska, and was a little over 18 years of age at the time of his death. He came to Elkader with his parents many years ago, and has since resided here.
Charlie was a universal favorite with all who knew him, highly respected and loved by his associates, who will never cease to mourn his early death.
Words fail us in our effort to offer consolation to the grief-stricken mother, the sorrowing brother and the kind father now hastening home ladened with his aching heart. Surely an all-wise Providence must have motives for casting such heavy burdens upon those that love him. To say that our people sympathize with them does not express it, we mourn.
The funeral occurred on Monday afternoon and was one of the most largely attended we have ever seen. Brief services were held at the family residence, after which his remains were laid away to their final rest in the East Side cemetery.
