Henry Ortman was born August 27, 1852, in Becklenberg, Schwerin, Germany. He came to America with his parents when he was 13 years old, coming to Clayton County, Iowa. Mr. Ortman lived his whole life in Clayton County on a farm. When in the year 1907 he saw that he should retire and live the remaining years in rest, he moved to Littleport, Ia., where he passed away Sept. 21, 1931, at 4:30 a.m.
Mr. Ortman was married to Miss Sophia Musfeldt, who survives him. To this union eight children were born, four boys and four girls, all living. The deceased had been in failing health for some time but the last three years he had failed and from day to day he gradually grew worse until finally God in His mercy called him home.
He leaves to mourn his beloved wife, eight children, Will, George, and Carl of Littleport, Louis of Cedar Rapids, Mrs. John Bock of Elkader, Mrs. Charlie Lange of Mederville, Mrs. E. L. Gifford of Dubuque, Mrs. Edna Burns of Hopkington; also 19 grandchildren, with a host of other relatives and friends who mourn the loss of a neighbor and friend.
He reached the age of 79 years, 25 days.
