STRAWBERRY POINT: The remains of Don King, who was accidentally killed at Iowa City last Sunday evening, were brought here Tuesday morning and the funeral services occurred in the afternoon at the Congregational church, conducted by the pastor, Rev. Lewis Troyer. The floral offerings were beautiful and the church was filled with friends of the deceased. The pallbearers were members of his class: Joe Gratke, Forrest Hamlett, Oscar Schmidt, Mark Goodrich, Jr., Ralph Sargent and Walter Kingsland. Interment took place in our beautiful cemetery, the members of the local Masonic lodge having charge of the services at the grave.
Don King, youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. John R. King, was born March 14, 1905, at the farm home just east of town and met death in an automobile accident near Iowa City at 6 o'clock Sunday evening, August 09, 1931, having attained the age of 26 years, four months and 25 days.
When he was a small child the family moved to town, where all of his life was spent except for the past six years while he was away working at his trade. He attended the local public school and graduated with the class of 1922. The members of the class presented a beautiful floral offering, a wheel made of roses and one spoke broken signifying that he was the first one to enter the home beyond. During the last few years in school he entered the office of the local newspaper as an apprentice linotype operator and by the time he had completed his high school course was an efficient operator. Shortly after graduating he went to Arlington, where he operated a linotype machine for a period of two years. In 1925 he accepted a similar position with the Iowa City Press Citizen, where he has been a faithful employee for the past six years.
He was a young man of sterling character, courteous and retiring of manner and generous beyond the average, with his friends who were legion.
He was baptized into the Congregational church when a small child, where he retained his membership during the short period of his life. He was also a member of the local Masonic lodge, having been made a Mason shortly after reaching his majority, the degrees being conferred by his father.
He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John R. King, one sister, Mrs. Myrtle Schmidt of this place, one brother, Harold King of Des Moines, besides his aged grandmother, Phoebe King of Cedar Rapids and other relatives and a large circle of friends.
