Clayton County Register, Thur., 21 May 1931.

The subject of this sketch, Louis Bente, son of William and Marie Bente, was born on the Bente farm in Cox Creek township, Clayton County, Iowa, on April 07, 1852, and passed away at his home Sunday evening, May 17, 1931, at the age of 79 years, one month and ten days.

On July 06, 1874, when a young man of 22, he was married at Elkader to Mrs. Mike Bente, nee Liddie Beeh, the widow of his brother Mike, who had lost his life while digging a well on a place adjoining the home farm, leaving his wife and one little son, William. Four children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Louis Bente; Earnest, John, Sam and Louis.

Mr. Bente had a rugged constitution and always enjoyed good health. By hard work and wise economy he was in a position that he could, and perhaps should have returned from active farm work years ago, to spend his declining years in more comfort and ease. But that was not his disposition. He found enjoyment in work and thus kept it up, until forced to slow down. For the last few months he failed visibly; an internal disease gradually absorbing his energy and vitality of body. Nothing was left undone to give comfort and relief, until death put him beyond human care. He breathed his last on the same farm where, 79 years ago, he was born in a log cabin, a record not found very often.

He leaves his wife and life's companion, who has shared with him the joys and sorrows of life for 57 years, one step-son, William, of Mederville; two sons, John, of Strawberry Point, and Sam, on a farm joining the home farm. Two sons, Louis and Earnest, having preceded their father in death; the latter in December of last year. He also leaves 8 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, other relatives and many old-time friends and neighbors. He was a man on whose word anyone could depend. May he rest in peace.

Services were held at the home at two o'clock Tuesday afternoon and interment was made in the Communia cemetery, the Rev. C. H. Franke of Elkader officiating.
