Clayton County Register, Thur., 22 Jan. 1931.
GARNAVILLO- William John Splies was born Nov. 17, 1862, in Garnavillo township. He was the youngest of a family of six children, two brothers and three sisters; the two brothers preceded him in death. Mr. Splies was baptized by the Rev. Stockfield at Ceres and confirmed April 1st, 1877, by Rev. Lorenz. February 09, 1897, he was united in marriage to Louise Reimer. This union was blessed with two children, Ruth, married to Clifford Sutton, and Jake at home.
His suffering began in September, 1929, and until the time of his death no medical aid was able to restore him back to health. Last Christmas he wanted to participate in the Lord's Supper at the church, but on account of the cold weather and his weakened condition he decided to take it at his home, which he did on Sunday Jan. 05. Members of his family and his friends did not expect him to leave them so soon, but his body, weakened by his long suffering, could not resist pneumonia, which on Sunday morning caused his death.
He leaves to mourn, his wife, Louise Splies, his two children, three sisters, Mrs. Louise Meyer, Mrs. Chas. Meyer, both of Postville, and Mrs. Caroline Wirkler, of Garnavillo, two grandchildren, Katheryn and William Sutton, besides his many other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at the St. Paul church Thursday, Jan. 13, the Rev. Mr. Peterson officiating.
