Friends were surprised Friday morning to learn that Mrs. N. A. Simmons had passed away from pneumonia. She had not been well for some time but was up and about most of the time until pneumonia set in. Thursday she seemed better but took a turn for the worse and in spite of medical aid and loving care, death entered the home and took a devoted wife and mother, one who will be missed not only in the home but by her neighbors and friends, for she was kind to all.
Mrs. Simmons, nee Belle Gilbert, was born Oct. 06, 1864, at Frankford, New Hampshire. When two years of age she moved with her parents to Elkader, where she attended the public school and was graduated. For a number of years she taught school. October 02, 1899, she was united in marriage to N. A. Simmons of this place, where she has since resided. To this union two children were born, one having preceded the mother in death. She was an earnest worker in the Congregational church and a member of the Thimble Society and also of the D.A.R. She is survived by her husband, one daughter, Mrs. Chas. (Ruth) Gallentine, of this place, and a devoted grandson, Charles Gallentine, also other relatives and many friends. Funeral services occurred Sunday afternoon at the Congregational church, conducted by Rev. Lewis Tryer. Interment took place in the local cemetery. The pall bearers were: J. S. Knight, Chas. Wilcox, Harold MacKean, R. C. Norris, George Dexter and L. Lathrop. Truly a good woman has gone from us but let us not forget her kindness.
