John W. McLaughlin was born in DeKalb, Ill., May 15, 1854, the oldest son of John McLaughlin and Winifred Hauahan McLaughlin. When he was nine months old the family moved to Elkader, Clayton County, which county has been his home ever since. He removed from Elkader to McGregor eleven years ago.

March 17, 1884, he married Mary Orr of Elkader, who preceded him in death, March 1885. One son, James, was born to this union. January 10, 1888, he was married to Margaret Humphrey of Monona, who with the following children survive: Leo and John of Gary, Ind., Mac, Margaret and Geraldine of McGregor, with James of Gary. Three children, Winifred, Earl and Elmer also preceded their father in death. One brother, James of McGregor and one sister Mary Mulligan of Denver, Colo., also survive.

Mr. McLaughlin for many years was associated with the business circle of Elkader and he, together with the late James Humphrey, built the Humphrey & McLaughlin building, one of the best business houses in this town.

Funeral services were held Monday morning at ten o'clock, at St. Joseph's church here. The Rev. J. J. Horsefield of McGregor read the Requiem Mass and the Very Rev. James Taken of Elkader conducted the services at the grave.

Out of town relatives at the funeral were: James and wife, Leo and wife and John and wife, Mrs. E. E. Beers, all of Gary, Ind., F. A. McCarthy, Kansas City; Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Nolan, Plankinton, S.D., Mrs. T. J. Grady and daughter and Mrs. Joe Grady of St. Paul, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Roerig, Winnebago, Minn., Clarence Latham, Mrs. Susan Radke, Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Brooks of Chicago, Mrs. J. J. Foran and Dan Hagerty of Minneapolis, John, Hazel and Pat Fury, Dubuque; Dr. and Mrs. J. Cain, Waukon, L. C. Wareham, Strawberry Pint, Con Wareham, Dysart and relatives from Monona and Elkader.
