Mrs. Dorothea Baade, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jocheim Friman, was born December 23, 1843 in Lenzen, Provice Preussen, Germany. Through baptism as a babe she was made a child of God, and after due instruction in the word of God, she was confirmed at the age of 14.

Her childhood days were spent in Germany, her mother country. On May 4, 1867, she was united in marriage to Jocheim Baade. On June of the following year, 1868, she together with her husband left Germany, to make their home in this county. Here they took up the work of farming first in the neighborhood of Garnavillo, then in the neighborhood of St. Olaf, and finally in Wagner township.

This marriage was blessed with eight children, all of whom settled in or near the vicinity of their parents. Mrs. Baade, after spending many years with her husband on the farm retired to their small home in the country.

A few years following their retirement, on February 18, 1902 her husband died, leaving her to carry on alone for the past 26 years. The life of Mrs. Dorothea Baade was filled with hardships and difficulties. She endured many of the disappointments that only the loving heart of a mother knows.

Especially hard were her last years when it was inconvenient for her to get about. On Nov. 18, 1932 she fell, injuring herself and impairing her health. On December 27, 1932, her daughters, Mrs. Klausen and Mrs. Eggers, who had been helping her as much as their own duties at home would permit moved her to town at the home of Mrs. Klausen. But even though she was under the close care of her daughters, health did not return.

Sunday evening, Aug. 27 she suffered a stroke from which she never regained consciousness. She passed away Thursday morning, August 31, at 12:45. Her death came to her at the age of 89 years, 8 months and 7 days.

Besides her brothers and sisters, two children, a daughter Ida and a son Fred have preceded her in death, she leaves to mourn her six children; Mrs. Dorothy Klausen, William Baade, Mrs. Mary Eggers, all of Farmersburg; John Baade, west of Farmersburg; Louis Baade, who had made his home with her and Herman Baade of Luana. Also 14 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.
