Elkader Register, Thur., 23 Dec. 1920.

Our community was shocked on Sunday, December 12, by the news of the death of Wm. A. Downey which occurred at 3:30 p.m.

Wm. A. Downey was born on the old homestead in Garnavillo Township on January 17, 1864, and died December 12, 1920 at the age of 56 years, 10 months and 25 days.

He attended the public schools of his native township and labored faithfully on the home farm until 1889 when he started farming on the Uriell place in Read township. He resided here and was engaged in farming until January 1894 when he moved to the present homestead in Volga township where the family still resides.

On May 3, 1892 he was united in marriage to Johannah Geaghan at St. Michael's Catholic Church at Elkport by Rev. E. L. Darland. To this union were born ten children; viz; Joe L., George F., D. Harland, Katherine C., Michael, James W., John E., Walter A., Stella, Anna M. The above named children and a sorrowing wife are left to mourn the loss of a kind and indulgent father, and faithful companion. He also leaves two brothers; Thomas, of California and James of Garber, and one sister, Mrs. M. J. O'Connor of Garber, Iowa, to mourn his departure.

The funeral was held from his home near Communia to St. Joseph's Catholic church at Elkader, on Tuesday, December 14th, where a mass of Requiem was celebrated by Rev. James Taken after which the remains were tenderly laid to rest, in the family lot in St. Joseph's cemetery. The casket being bourne by six stalwart sons of the deceased.

The family have the heartfelt sympathy of a large circle of friends and neighbors in this hour of their sad affliction.

"May he rest in Peace."
