The death of Rev. George Heinrich Fuehr occurred last Sunday morning at his home on Elkader street after a lingering illness. He was born in Muenchen, in the Kingdom of Bavaria, Germany, Sept. 13, 1838. Being left an orphan at the age of three he was taken into the home of his maternal relatives, Leonhard and Wilhelmina Fosenbaner. He was not yet five years old when he entered school at Aufkirchen where he remained until he was fourteen. Christened in the Lutheran church Mr. Fuehr was confirmed on Palm Sunday in the year 1852. From March 1860 to 1866 Mr. Fuehr wore a uniform though he saw but a year and a half of active service as a soldier boy. At the expiration of this term he was relieved from active duty though still subject to war should war break out. It was in 1863 that he first began preparation for the service of the church entering a mission house at Ne_________, Bavaria and his studies were continued for more than three years with the short vacation of only five weeks in each year. Fuehr was called upon to suffer the loss of his wife, two children having preceded her in death. Sometime later he married Miss Philippine Elizabeth Schaaf of Berea, Ohio. After spending nine years with his first congregation Rev. Fuehr accepted a call in Aug. 1875 to one of the oldest congregations of the Iowa Synod, St. Sebald, it was organized either in 1853 or in the spring of 1854 under the care of Rev. J. D__nd____fer before the Synod was organized. With his family he came to his western charge in Sept. 1875 and remained their beloved pastor until three years ago when on account of his advanced age he moved to town. Besides his wife he leaves one daughter, Mrs. Clara Hil__ger, of Dundee, and three sons, Bernard Fuehr of Ohio, Theodore Fuehr of Cedar Rapids, and Otto Fuehr of this place, and a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held in the Lutheran church Wednesday forenoon. Interment will take place in the St. Sebald cemetery.

A much clearer obituary was also published in the Volga City News 12/8/1920. That obit gives his 1st wife as Christina Guthman. Additional information mostly as in the Elkader paper obituary.
