Elkader Register, Thur., 30 Sept. 1920. Fairview column.
Another one of the old residents passed away Wednesday of last week when John Harry died from an attack of pneumonia complicated by old age. He was born Nov. 21, 1847, near Greensburg, Pennsylvania, and was the oldest of three sons of James and Rebecca Harry. His father emigrated to Iowa in 1859 when John was a boy of 12 and bought a farm near Osterdock in a neighborhood where other relatives had already located. On the 29th of June 1879 he was married to Charlotte Hurry, a neighbor girl. To them were born five children, Jennie of this neighborhood, Eva of Dubuque, William of Midland, South Dakota, Maggie deceased, and Marie of Dubuque. He was taken seriously ill recently and in spite of all medical skill and the loving ministrations of his dear ones he passed from this earth, Sept. 21, 1920 aged 72 years and 10 months. Since coming to Iowa, Mr. Harry has always lived on the farm where the death angel called him. On it he grew to manhood. Here he brought his bride. There his children were born and grew to womanhood and manhood and from it he watched them depart to make homes of their own. In his last illness Mr. Harry was very patient. He was always cheerful, always answering that he was feeling fine and inquiring after your health in a most careful thoughtful way. He was very fond of flowers and missed them so much that during the last days there was hardly a moment but that he held a spray of them in his hand. Loved ones did all they could to ease his sufferings and to prolong his life but his advanced age rendered ineffective their efforts. He leaves to mourn, the wife, Mrs. Aleck Moser of this vicinity, Mrs. Joe Hunt and Mrs. Eva Hodges of Dubuque, a son William of Midland, South Dakota, six grandchildren, a brother Frank of Guttenberg and numerous other relatives and friends. The funeral services were held from the Bethel church on Saturday afternoon Rev. Riggs of the Fairview church preached the sermon while music was given by the Fairview choir. L. A. Zearley, of Garbe, had charge of the body.
