Elkader Register, Thur., 02 Sept. 1920. Wagner column.
The subject of this sketch, Frederike Heuer, was born on June 15th, 1852, at Werder, Germany. Having graduated from the Public School, she was confirmed by Rev. F. W. Braue, on March 26, 1866 at Little Beuster, near Seehausen. For a number of years she worked out until the spring of 1883, when she came to this country, accompanied by a sister and brother. At first they located near Garnavillo, Iowa, but shortly afterwards they moved to Read township.
On Dec. 14th, 1883, she was united in marriage with Jacob Eggimann of Boardman township. To this union were born seven children, four sons and three daughters.
In the spring of 1894, during a scarlet fever epidemic, all the children were down with the dreadful disease at the same time. Those were hard and trying days for the parents, especially for the mother. It meant tending the sick day and night. And when in spite of all efforts and care three of her little ones passed away within two weeks, the mother broke down and has never quite recovered from the nervous strain.
After years of hard work the parents decided to take life somewhat easier. So they gave their children charge of the farm and moved to Elkader in the spring of 1912, which has been their home ever since.
Last winter Mrs. Eggimann was down with the influenza for about two weeks. She never quite got over it, and this was no doubt the beginning of her last sickness.
The 2nd of June she again took sick and on the 13th of the same month she had a stroke of paralysis; and for about a week she was in a critical condition. But she again rallied, and there were hopes for her recovery. But this was only temporary, dropsy set in and in spite of medical aid and loving care she passed away on Monday, August 30th, 1920, at 1:30 o'clock in the afternoon, at the age of 68 years, 2 months and 15 days.
The aged husband mourns the departure of a true companion and a faithful helpmate; the children who have lost a good mother are: Louisa at home, Mrs. Alma Munger, of Allamakee, Co., Fred and Otto, on the old home farm in Boardman township. She also leaves 8 grandchildren, one sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Haverland of Giard township, and other relatives and many old-time friends and neighbors, who will miss her in the days and years to come.
Funeral services were conducted by her pastor, Rev. Franke, on Thursday afternoon, Sept. 2d, 1:30 at the house and 2:00 o'clock at the Ev. Friedens church. The Frauen Verein, of which the departed was a faithful member, attended in a body.
