Elkader Register, Thur., 15 July 1920. From the Garnavillo Tribune, undated.
Mr. Fred Gossman died at his home here Sunday morning, July 4th, about 6 o'clock, after a lingering illness. He had not been in his usual health since last fall, and it was found he was suffering from cancer. In February a surgeon was consulted but an operation was not deemed advisable as the case was too far advanced. He was tenderly cared for during his illness by his son Lester and others, who did all in their power to alleviate his suffering.
Fredrick John Gossman was born on Sept. 29th, 1858, in Read township, as the third oldest child of Christopher Gossman and his wife Sophie, nee Haman. His childhood days and school years were spent in the parental home. He worked on a farm from the age of 15 to 21 when he learned the carpenter trade.
On Oct. 15th, 1885, he was united in marriage to Miss Caroline Bothmer. This union was blessed with seven children: Verni, Harley, Raymond and Lester; three boys, LeRoy, George and Harold preceded the parents in death. Mrs. Gossman died at their home in Communia on July 5th, 1908. Mr. Gossman and sons moved to Garnavillo in 1916.
Deceased leaves four sons: Verni, married to Martha Harms, living near Round Up, Mont.; Harley, Supply Sergeant, 3rd Div., 18 Field Artillery, stationed at Camp Pike, Ark.; Raymond, married to Eva Ammon, living in Garnavillo and Lester at home; one sister, Mrs. Anna Wilke, of Elkader; five brothers: John of Huron, S. Dak.; Louis, Northfield, Minn.; Henry, Elkader; Christ, Lester, Iowa; William of Indiana; three grandchildren and a wide circle of other relatives and friends.
