Mrs. Marie Lucas Stendel died suddenly of an attack of heart trouble last Friday, September 29, 1933, at her home near Elkader. She had reached the age of 85 years. She was born in Grotz-Boister, Province of Sachsen, Germany, on August 6, 1848, the daughter of Christopher and Katharina Lucas. She was married on June 22, 1873, to Gottfried Stendel in Germay and immediately started out with him for America. They reached Clayton County on July 13, 1873, and after living in Garnivillo and Clayton Center, settled on the farm where she has continued to resude for 42 years.
She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Amelia Meyers, of Elkader, and three sons, Charles Stendel who lives on the home farm, Wm. Stendel of Elkader, and Herman Stendel of Northwood, Iowa. A fourth son, Fred Stendel, was killed in service in France during the World War.
In her youth she was confirmed in the German Lutheran church, and although after coming to this country she was not able to take an active part in church work, she maintained a christian life and character in performing the duties of the home and in ministering to the needs of her family.
Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at 1:30 at the home and at 2 O'clock in the Evangelical Church, with Reverend C.J. Brewester officiating in the absense of Reverend Pau Kittier. Burial East Side Cemetery.
