Elkader Register, Thur., 06 May 1920. Strawberry Point column.

The funeral services of Clarence B. Uhl were held Tuesday morning in the M.E. church conducted by Rev. Smith. Last Thursday he bade his mother goodbye and said he was going for a walk. Not returning home the family became alarmed and search and telephone messages were sent but no trace of him could be found until Sunday afternoon when some children who live near the fairgrounds were playing on the grounds and happened to go in the floral hall where a threshing machine was and found him hanging by one of the rafters of the building. Just when the suicide occurred no one seems to know. The alarm was given and the remains were taken to the Franklin Furniture Store undertaking parlors. Mr. Uhl was in the Spanish American War and when the World War called for volunteers he like a man ready to fight for his country enlisted. Shell shot and gas the heritage of French battlefields are believed to have been responsible for the mental disturbance which caused him to take his life. He was wounded and gassed and for several months after his return to the United States was under treatment in the government hospitals and later placed in the asylum at Independence. He received a furlough and his sisters, Miss Mary Uhl, of this place, and Mrs. M. H. Liddy, of Hawkeye, brought him here for a rest. About two weeks ago he received his discharge. He was a young man of winning disposition and attracted friendship easily. To his mother who is prostrated with grief, the seven brothers and three sisters his death is a shock that time alone may heal. The sympathy of the community goes out to the bereaved ones in their sorrow.
