Another one of our old settlers, Mr. Fred Schmile [sic], of Garber, passes away on Sunday at his home in Garber at the ripe old age of 81.

Elkader Register, 01 Jan. 1920. Garber column.
On Sunday a.m. at his residence, in Garber, occurred the death of Mr. Fred Schuell [sic], one of our pioneer residents, at the age of 82 years. Mr. Schuell was born in the year 1838 at Farbinder Magebburg, Germany, and came to this country in 1873, residing on a farm in Volga township until 1906. In this year he moved to Garber where his declining years were spent.
He leaves to mourn his death his aged wife and two children, via. Mrs. M. Gerdes, and Mrs. Herman Kruse. Three children preceded him in death. The funeral took place Wednesday at the Lutheran church in Elkport, Rev. Stolz officiating.
